Nivea Hamilton Nash Arrested After Drunk Driving Car Accident in Atlanta
Nivea Hamilton Nash, the ex-wife of singer-songwriter The-Dream and mother to one of Lil Wayne's children, was arrested and charged with DUI after causing an Atlanta drunk driving accident, reports BET. The 29-year-old mother of four wrapped her Mercedes around a tree while one of her children was in the backseat.
After the accident, Nash was taken to Fulton County Jail. She was reportedly belligerent at the point of arrest. She told officers that she only had three drinks earlier in the evening. Police report that she had bloodshot and glassy eyes and smelled like alcohol.
Our Atlanta car accident attorneys recognize the dangers that drunk drivers pose to innocent motorists on our roadways. Luckily no one was injured in this incident, but a majority of drunk driving accidents don't have such a happy ending. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 11,000 motorists lost their lives because of car accidents that involved a drunk driver in 2009 alone.
Nash and a number of American motorists made it onto the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) "most wanted" list. According to the NTSB, someone is killed in an accident that involves an alcohol-impaired driver every 48 minutes. These fatalities consistently make up a third of all traffic fatalities every year. Drunk drivers don't always get caught by officers on our roadways. The NHTSA reports that a driver will make approximately 88 impaired driving trips before being arrested.
"We see far too many people suffer tragic injuries and loss of their loved ones as a result of drunk driving. This careless disregard for human life must stop," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters.
The NTSB Recommends that States up the Ante When Fighting Drunk Drivers on Their Roadways
- Create programs that act as a deterrent. Conduct sobriety checkpoints often. Checkpoints are not only for deterring drinking and driving, but they can also be used to promote a number of other highway safety measures at the same time, including checking for valid driver's licenses and seat belt use.
- Enlist a law requiring administrative license revocation (ALR) for any motorist who fails or refuses a sobriety test. ALR laws have been proven to reduce adult fatal accidents by an estimated 15 percent.
- Limit plea bargaining and diversion programs in court. Make sure that penalties and sentences are strict and concise.
- Assess offenders for underlying alcohol problems. If necessary, require then to undergo appropriate treatment and hold them accountable for behavioral change.
- Consider the requirement of ignition interlock systems.
- To reduce repeat offenses sentence those who have been convicted to attend jail/treatment facilities, to home detention with electronic monitoring or to intensive supervision probation.
"Our message is simple. If you drive drunk you will be arrested and prosecuted. No exceptions. No excuses," said National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator Nicole R. Nason.

After being involved and a five car accident I contacted Casey Stevens law firm. I was given his number by a fellow coworker at my job who had used him in the past and was very satisfied with his services. The car accident included myself my husband and my son, the accident was determined to be the fault of two drivers involved in the accident. Casey personally came to my home the next day and said down with me and my family at the kitchen table and went over all the events of the accident. There were months and months of physical therapy, doctor visits injections and while my son had to have his mouth wired after having his jaw broke in three places. Casey and his staff worked continuously on our case and after it was all said and done, they where able to get us over $300,000 in damages. I really want to Thank Casey Stevens and his staff for always being available for phone calls and answering any questions I might have. I will continue to recommend potential clients to Casey Stevens law firm. Nina F
